Must-Read Copywriter Resources

I’m presenting, in two parts, those online newsletters that focus on copywriting, the business of copywriting, as well as SEO and web development because if you’re going to grow your business, you’re going to want to know or have working knowledge of these areas — for your clients as well as yourself.
** PART ONE: Freebie Newsletters **
I still can’t believe I can get all this great information from some of the industry’s top performers and not pay a cent. Come sit, grasshopper, at the feet of these masters and learn:
BOB BLY’S DIRECT RESPONSE LETTER
The copywriter’s copywriter - I don’t think anyone is more prolific than this guy. His work includes these absolute, gotta-have references (among several other books) that every budding and seasoned copywriter need to have:
- The Copywriter’s Handbook, Third Edition : A Step-By-Step Guide To Writing Copy That Sells. Revised and Expanded
- Complete Idiot’s Guide to Direct Marketing
From copy techniques to boosting income, this is the info that will sharpen your skills as you grow your copywriting business. I have these on my personal reference shelf because even after 20+ years, I’m still learning, too!
Written by John Forde, this is a weekly e-newsletter filled with excellent material on copywriting as well as whatever topic John finds of interest that week. One of my favorite, never-miss reads.
Gary Bencivenga is one of the industry most successfully and respected copywriters. He shows that you can write crisp, clean copy in a low-key "business professional" style that I greatly admire and work hard at emulating. He sends ‘em when he ’sends ‘em. Each issue is total gold.
Clayton Makepeace offers a "complete copywriting course in every issue" - his stuff is packed to the brim with every kind of tool, tip, thought, test - you name it. His is a strong, hard-charging style but you’ll learn, learn, learn from this guy. I print this stuff out and keep it under my keyboard for inspiration!
From Nick Usborne, one of my favorite copywriters. Each issue includes an article, some reviews, and the occasional poll. A quick and useful read!
