6 Qualities of a Great Copywriting Client

Wooing a client (or even better, being wooed by one) is like dating. Everyone is on their best behavior … there’s no belching (or worse) at the dinner table … and we’re mindful of what we say and do.

But there are a few ways to know if that potential client you’re playing nice with will be a Great Client or a Bad Client. Here is my take on the 6 qualities (there are more but these 6 will more than do) that make for a Great Client.

#1 – A Great Client respects your professionalism and value as a contributor to the sales effort.

#2 – A Great Client articulates the project with specifics, facts, and lots of background material.

#3 – A Great Client gives you complete access to the people and material you need to write the promotion.

#4 – A Great Client returns your calls and emails on a timely basis.

#5 – A Great Client gives prompt and specific feedback.

#6 – A Great Client provides samples of the work for your portfolio.

But wait, did I say just 6? No way! Here’s a 7th quality for no extra charge:

#7 – A Great Client pays you on time!

Maven’s Maxim
You may not always get a Great Client but a Good Client has the potential to be great when they are properly nudged in the right direction, usually when you’ve proven your worth. So don’t discount the good, but if you can, run swiftly away from the bad.
