Freelancers Union to Offer Health Insurance Plans in 31 States
By Roberta Rosenberg on May 29, 2007 in Running Your Biz
There are a lot of upsides to freelancing, but a major downside is getting decent health coverage. Unless they have spouses/partners who have health insurance benefits, too many freelancers pay huge rates for basically crappy coverage, or worse go "bare."
Formerly only available to freelancers in NY, come June 1 Freelancers Union will now be offering health insurance plans for folks in 31 states.
Until we get some sort of universal health coverage in this country, you’ll need to find your own best plan — and the older we get, the harder decent coverage is to find. This might offer a good plan for you and your family.

Thanks for the info. But, I would never join a Union to get health coverage! I have BlueCross PPO. Ya, it’s a bit pricey but my wife and kids get to keep the doctors they like, trust and are comfortable with. So, I guess it’s worth it.

AH! Every bordering state is getting it! Why isn’t mine?!
I live three minutes from the Virginia state line - literally. Am I going to have to move for health care coverage?
*sigh*

For the freelancers insurance, you still have to apply directly to the insurance company (Golden Rule). Which you can do on your own outside of Freelancers. It seemed that they implied that they NEW Health Insurance plan would be available in 31 states on a group basis, which is what people need. However, that only applied if you live/work in CT/NJ/NY. I am quite disappointed.
